Joanne Bartek (2016)

Joanne Bartek with check

Joanne Bartek was diagnosed at age 29 with stage 3B breast cancer. Ten days later she discovered she was pregnant with her and husband’s 4th child. While pregnant she endured two surgeries and a total of 11 rounds of chemotherapy. Every week she had ultrasounds to ensure the health of their baby. At thirty-six weeks Joanne delivered a beautiful, completely healthy 5lb 4oz baby girl, named Savannah. Five days after the birth of her daughter, hoping that the surgeries and chemo had removed all the cancer, Joanne and her husband, Adam, were told that it had spread to her liver. Joanne endured multiple additional surgeries and now is on oral chemo and other medications to suppress the cancer. Adam and Joanne have 4 girls: Jadyn,12, Janessa, 10, Marissa, 3, and Savannah-their miracle baby, age 8 months. Joanne is a registered nurse and works part time at St. Elizabeth Regional Medical Center. She feels blessed to have gone through this battle to be able to provide additional support and more empathetic care with her patients. She is passionate about educating young women about the risk of breast cancer, and some day hopes that with her RN degree she can go into some sort of public education that deals with young women with cancer.
